Never in the history of aviation has anyone jumped out of an aircraft with a paraglider and reentered the same aircraft on the same flight. But in March 2010, extreme athlete, Bill Heaner will attempt this record attempt in Casa Grande, Arizona.
How it will work:
Bill Heaner will do what no one has ever attempted, but it does have a high
element of risk. Bill and crew will climb to 7,000' in a balloon with
professional balloon pilot Scott Nicol. Next, Bill will hang his paraglider out
of the balloon upside down, and, when the timing is right, Bill will jump out
and over his paraglider in a front somersault to the end of his paragliding
lines. This is a dramatic and risky exit as it can often end in a parachute
deployment. If the exit is successful, Bill will then gain control of his
stalled paraglider and slowly circle while Scott rapidly descends his balloon
below Bill to an altitude of 5,500'. At a predetermined point, Scott will then
stop his balloon from descending, cover his burners and wait for Bill to make
his final approach towards the tiny landing point suspended in mid air.

The next part is where things get interesting…
Bill will circle and descend to Scott's altitude. Bill will then set up an approach to hopefully land back into the basket of the parked balloon on the same flight! If Bill misses the basket, he will be on his own with a tangled mess of lines and fabric while falling from 5,500'. Bill will be wearing two backup parachutes.
