Hind-Sight Syndrome – Everyone that develops a life-style disease too early in life wishes they could go back and change some things. I watched my own father go through this “hind-sight” syndrome. In his early forties, he was diagnosed with high blood pressure. His high blood pressure was due solely to his lifestyle. I remember my mother arguing with him about his unwillingness to take his high blood pressure medication, get more exercise, lose some weight, reduce his sodium, change his diet, etc. He ignored that advice and was often heard saying that “everyone has to die sometime, so why not enjoy yourself while you’re alive.”

In his early sixties, he had a stroke and for the next ten horrific years before his death, he lived to regret this cavalier attitude toward his health and my mother’s advice.

If only we could go back in time.

The real issue is that most people believe that their rhythm is good enough, so most are willing to the gamble that their choices will unlikely result in an unhappy ending like my father’s. The sad part of this mindset is that you are likely giving away some of the most precious years of your life over an unwillingness to change a rhythm.

And those rhythms are learned. Perhaps the biggest obstacles we will ever face in our lives are in the rhythms we learn from early childhood. I was fortunate that my mother’s health and lifestyle choices were the complete opposite of my father’s, so I got both sides. After my father’s death, I dedicated my life to nutritional research and human wellness mostly in an effort to understand how to avoid what he went through. As it turned out, human nutrition was the major puzzle piece and eventually the impetus for creating my company, WholeBody Green. I am convinced that if my father had something like WholeBody Green in his diet early enough in his life, he would still be alive and healthy today. Hindsight.

Today, in spite of the massive amount of research and supporting data on how to potentially avoid the major landmines of lifestyle diseases, we still have epidemic rates of obesity, heart-disease and Type II diabetes. “Metabolic Syndrome” is the fountainhead of these killer diseases and I will later dedicate another full article on this important subject. Remember that these poor lifestyle habits are the result of rhythms that can be changed if properly addressed. Too often, we fail over and over with essential lifestyle changes because we do not address the root cause – learned childhood behaviors.

So where do we start to actually change our poor lifestyle habits and rhythms into healthy ones?

Small changes in the right order…
In the beginning of our quest to live a healthier life, we need to start with small, incremental, positive changes that give us a reward; a benefit that makes us feel a certain way. Study after study shows a strong correlation between long-lasting behavioral changes and measurable, consistent reward. The opposite is true as well. If you begin an exercise routine and get sore, you stop. If you eat something healthy, but it doesn’t taste good, you stop. In short order, you go back to the Oreos and the couch.

Forget fad diets. They don’t work for the long-term and most of them starve your body of essential nutrition. Breakfast For Life!

The Cycle Begins…
Around 50 years ago, a steady supply of processed or refined foods started to make their way into our food supply. Home cooking was replaced with the “TV Dinner” – physical activity replaced with television. And, as our food supply became polluted with highly processed sugary cereals, snack cakes, soda pop and processed meals, we also started a trend of becoming less active. As a result, the “perfect storm” for degenerative diseases such as cancers, heart disease, osteoporosis and diabetes began to climb in a direct correlation with these knew lifestyle habits. The health report card for North America is the worst it has ever been.

Today
North Americans are unhealthier than any time in our history. Trends of obesity and type II diabetes in children as young as four years old are trends never before seen in our country. These trends gets worse every year in spite a trillion dollar health and wellness industry that is suppose to be offering healthy alternatives. Where is it going wrong?

Obesity
Most of the weight gain we see in this country can be associated with us eating way more than we need and, of course, not burning enough calories. The root cause is that there is just simply not enough nutrition in the foods that we eat so our bodies are always hungry. This is the nutritional hunger signal giving us false cravings through bad programming. Our brains tell us to keep eating until our bodies can get the nutrition it is literally starving for.

So, as it turns out, lifestyle habits are just simply not changing and we don’t exactly know why, but there is hope emerging. A trending movement toward high, net-gain superfood extracts is beginning to win favor in every discipline of the scientific community concerned with human health and wellness. These highly nutritious foods in supplement form are finally beginning to replace the multivitamin idea.

My Story
I have always used supplemental nutrition as an edge in my life, but in 1999, I began to take these principles more seriously and started researching superfoods. I began competing professionally as an extreme athlete in 1999 and, in 2000, won the USA national championship in hang gliding aerobatics. Much of my success in this area came from changing the way I looked at nutrition; specifically, the introduction of high net-gain superfoods into my daily diet. I trained very hard physically and noticed that I was recovering more quickly from the highly stressful mental and physical training in my sports. I started to notice that proper recovery from exercise was key and that the major aspect of physical recovery was rooted mostly in the food that I was consuming and the deep sleep I was getting.

The basic concept of high, net-gain nutrition is that if you could extract all of the best nutritients from an amount of food that your body needs and get rid of the bulk that has no nutritional value, then you would have a high, net gain food source – assuming what you had left was easily digestible and had enough variety. These modern miracle foods require much less energy to digest, ingest and metabolize and, with the presence of added digestive enzymes to the mix, you relieve your own body from having to produce them in any great quantities.

Modern day extracts and concentrates of green and fruit foods are a modern day miracle. Combine this with high, net-gain proteins such as whey isolate, omega fatty acids and digestive enzymes and you have the building blocks for an incredibly powerful and effective supplement.

As a natural source, raw vegetables and fruit are some of the best sources of this high, net-gain philosophy. Derived proteins and omega fatty acids are also in this category. You can absorb 90-98% of whey isolate, so its net-gain is extremely high.

The Multivitamin is Dead

The multivitamin or brown pills have received their eviction notice.

In January, 2007, Health News Digest reported that 52% of multivitamins chosen for testing by ConsumerLab were found to have lead contamination. A popular woman’s multivitamin contained 10 times the amount of lead permitted without a warning label in California! In addition, they found that they contained significantly more or less of the ingredients claimed on the packaging and that several were unable to properly break apart in simulated gastric fluid due to the binding agents. In other research, some of the sulfate binding agents in multivitamins are suspected to generate more free radicals than the antioxidants contained can neutralize. These multivitamins are made from the cheapest ingredients possible. They include fillers, dyes, additives and even sand (look for the term “silica” on the label).

This is bad news. This report unfortunately reaffirms the need for some sort of regulatory oversight to these supplement manufacturing processes. In a competitive environment, cutting necessary costs is key to staying in business, but in the health and wellness industry, there should be standard manufacturing practices that every business should comply with by law. Aside from this incredibly damning report, the multivitamin is just losing its steam anyway due to a more health-conscious consumer and proliferation of new research  into the whole food supplementation alternatives. With the North American epidemic of obesity, cancer and heart disease, there is good reason to question these multivitamin magic bullet approaches to better health. These dead, brown pills don’t inspire healthy eating habits anyway like whole food supplements seem to offer. Really, I think the attitude that got us into this health crisis is that if we take a cheap multivitamin, then we don’t have to worry about what we eat or even if we exercise.

The reality is that making a great supplement with a broad spectrum of fruit and green extracts along with vitamins, minerals, protein, enzymes, fiber, etc. is very expensive to manufacture. That is why you don’t see a lot of them out on the market. But the astounding health improvements of these types of products is irrefutable.
